At the designated bivouac site, the White patrol is stationed. Around it, 4–5 sentries, each a single scout, are positioned at a distance of several dozen paces from the bivouac. The terrain is not very open, allowing for stealthy approach.

At the appointed hour, various activities begin in the bivouac, carried out precisely in the order prescribed. For example: assembling backpacks in a specific place and order, setting up a certain type of field kitchen and lighting a fire, digging a pit for waste, striking camp, etc. Some tasks are to be performed simultaneously if so instructed.

Meanwhile, the Reds, who know the bivouac’s location, approach it individually in stealth. Whoever succeeds in getting close observes who is doing what and when. After ½ to ¾ of an hour (depending on how long the bivouac activities are to last), they withdraw and write reports on what they have seen, bringing them to the assembly point.

The obstacle in this reconnaissance is the sentries, who, upon spotting a scout, may challenge him («Halt!») from a distance of 20–25 paces, thereby taking him prisoner. If they spot the scout from a greater distance, they drive him off. The scout must then retreat, as he may be captured if a sentry approaches within 25 paces.

After the game ends, an evaluation is made to determine who brought the best report.

If a competition between Whites and Reds is to be held, the roles are reversed, and victory is awarded to the side that lost fewer people, provided they also delivered a good report. Otherwise, the other side wins, as in this case, a good report is more important.
