Game marked with an asterisk in the book: more suitable for older scouts.

In many exercises, there is a need to make a sketch of a certain section of terrain, a cartographic or perspective sketch. This is usually a cursory sketch, i.e., a very simplified drawing containing only the most important lines and objects of the terrain for the given purpose. However, even to create such a sketch, a certain skill is required, and this can be easily and quickly acquired through practice, but one must first learn the principles and methods of sketching from appropriate manuals.

One should start by making a cartographic sketch from a single point using the polar method, and only then proceed to sketch a route, which is essentially a polygonal sketch created by traversing. Specifically, after orienting the sketch and marking one’s position with a point, aim a ruler toward the nearest bend in the road and draw a line in that direction. Then, move toward that bend, counting steps (or estimating the distance by eye, which is simpler but less accurate), and mark each passed branch of the road to the right or left in the sketch at the appropriate place according to the scale. Upon reaching the bend in the road, mark this point in the sketch, reorient the sketch, aim toward the direction of the new section of the road, and so on as before. Additionally, if necessary, one can mark prominent terrain features located beside the traveled road.

Equally important is learning to make a perspective sketch, which should be as simple as possible, executed in general outlines, as this makes the drawing stand out clearly, which is the primary goal.
