A game for rural youth in the Rzeszów and Ropczyce districts (Lesser Poland), suitable for boys in the lowest grades of secondary schools. The boys choose (by drawing lots, see the General Part) an “elder” and a “Fabjan.” The rest stand in a row, and the elder assigns them the names of various animals. Then the call goes out: — Come, Fabjan! — I have nothing to ride on. — What animal do you sit on? — A horse (an ox, etc.). The named “animal” runs away. Fabjan chases it and, upon catching it, sits astride its shoulders and rides back before the elder, who asks: — What have you brought? — Needles. — And in those needles? — Gold. — Throw him into the mud. — The “horse” shakes off its rider (who dismounts), and the rider becomes Fabjan; the former Fabjan is then whispered the name of an animal by the elder and sent to the spot vacated by the horse—and the game continues. If Fabjan fails to catch the pursued “animal,” he returns to his place, and Fabjan remains in his role.
