This game involves two groups (two patrols). One group builds a snow fortress according to their own ideas, if possible with loopholes—either round (a rondel), four-sided (a bastion), or zigzag-shaped—a bastion. Once the fortress is completed, the group that built it becomes the garrison of the stronghold and prepares for defense, gathering a full supply of snowballs as ammunition.

The second group acts as the enemy, launching an attack on the fortress and aiming snowballs at its defenders. The defenders likewise try to hit the attackers with snowballs. Any scout struck by a snowball is considered “killed” and withdraws from the game. The number of attackers should generally be twice that of the defenders. After a quarter of an hour of attack, the game ends, and victory is awarded to the side that, after counting the casualties on both sides, has a greater number of survivors than the opposing side.
