The Hare

Section titled “Translated text”For the first time, two go as hares, following the same precise route and having the same endpoint where they must hide. They go, marking the path with chalk. The patrol leader, having explained the tracking rules (with the main emphasis on doing it so unobtrusively that the public does not notice), sends half the patrol ahead, then goes himself with the rest, while the last ones erase or obscure the marks. The game ends when the hidden hares are discovered. The next time, the hare may choose the route, but a sensible boy should be assigned to it—not one of those “clever” ones who wants to have fun at the expense of the patrol’s dissatisfaction. Further difficulties include calculating the number of tracks, placing marks in less visible spots (to hide them from other patrols), greater distance, and so on. Whenever the hare can run out of the city or to the riverbank, it should do so instead of wandering the main streets.
