An exercise similar to the previous one. The sides of the area through which one is allowed to sneak are precisely defined, e.g., by a road on the left and the edge of a forest on the right. Within this area, there are three lines of guards. Guarding is carried out by a small number of fixed outposts (2 people each), but mainly through patrolling. Patrols are not allowed to roam the entire area; they may only move along one line from the road to the forest, parallel to the outposts. The number of patrols assigned to each line (1–3) depends on the width of the area through which the sneaking takes place. The blockade, of course, cannot be too dense. One line of guards is positioned 200–300 paces from the next.
10–20 scouts sneak through the enemy lines to reach lantern X, placed 200–300 paces beyond the third line (the boundary).
The guards capture those sneaking by (by tapping them with a hand), but they are not allowed to chase them more than 10 paces in front of or beyond their own line.

Fig. 39.
The sneaking scouts win if, after the designated time (1–2 hours), at least 2 out of every 10 have made it past the boundary, i.e., to the lantern.
