A patrol of Whites is returning from reconnaissance to their unit in X. The path winds through a forest, which is difficult to traverse. Since the patrol must deliver important information, they have been ordered to avoid encountering a stronger enemy. The banner carried by the unit signifies forces twice as large as their actual numbers.
From the opposite direction, along the same path, a patrol of Reds with a banner is advancing. They have been ordered to patrol along the road and drive off the enemy, and if possible, take them prisoner.
The time should be calculated so that the opponents meet on the forest path. The Reds immediately launch an attack — but what about the Whites? This will show whether they quickly assess the situation and whether they have not neglected to issue the necessary orders in advance. For they should scatter at the patrol leader’s whistle. But what next? Will they regroup and how quickly at the assembly point, from which the entire patrol will return to X? Has the assembly point been designated, or will each scout individually make their way back to X?
Taking into account the march route, the scattering, the regrouping, and the final return, it is easy to determine whether the Whites’ patrol has completed the task well and in good time, or whether they have done it incorrectly and at the wrong time.
As always, the exact departure time for both patrols must be precisely marked, and these times do not have to be the same.
