A scout patrol lies in a single line on the ground, each scout 15 paces apart from the next. The patrol leader is in the middle. Opposite them, at a distance of 20–25 paces, another patrol lies in the same manner. The patrol leader gives a single sentence to the scouts on his right and left in a normal voice, e.g., “The cross on the chapel, under the little forest.” These scouts pass it along until it reaches the ends of the line. The opposing patrol listens in, and each scout in that patrol writes down what they heard.

If the sentence is passed without error all the way to the end, every scout who wrote it down correctly earns a point. If the sentence reaches the end in an altered form, it is determined who made the mistake in passing it along, and in the second patrol, every scout who noted the sentence with that error earns a point.

Then the patrols switch roles, and the patrol with the higher number of points wins. The distance between scouts and between patrols can be increased or decreased depending on the players’ skill.
