Tracking in the Snow
Translation details

Section titled “Translated text”In winter, 2 or 3 scouts set out across clean snow, while the rest follow their trail 15–25 minutes later. The fugitives, weaving through not very open terrain (quite extensive but with defined boundaries), try to mislead the trackers to gain time. If they are not caught within the set time, they win. For example, they may split up and cross their own tracks repeatedly, then reunite—erase their footprints behind them with a branch—alter their trail by tying a strap to a boot—exploit every patch of ground, fence, or bridge where no tracks are left (allowed for no more than 50 paces)—walk backward—step into their own tracks so that three become two or one, possibly creating a different mark by leaning on a stick, etc.—as long as it delays the pursuit.
The more cunning the fugitives display, the more tricks they use to deceive the pursuers, the greater their chances of winning.
Eventually, the fugitives hide in some thicket, where their pursuers catch up with them.
One restriction: it is forbidden to join other trails—if encountered, they must be immediately crossed.
A battle can also be added to this game. The fugitives, in their hiding place, prepare a pile of snowballs and begin pelting the pursuers. The latter do not hesitate to retaliate, and the fight rages in earnest. One accurate hit kills an attacker, while a fugitive requires two hits.
The outcome can then be decided as follows: the fugitives win if they are not found within the set time and also win the battle, i.e., kill half of the attackers. The attackers win if they reach the fugitives on time and kill them without losing half their own people. Any other result is a draw.
This game can also be played on skis.
