The Abandoned Bivouac
Translation details

Section titled “Translated text”A patrol camps on a glade: they pitch tents, set up campfires, cook, etc., performing various camp duties. After some time, they leave the camp and not only do they fail to erase the traces of the campsite, but on the contrary, they leave behind various small objects and signs of their stay. (All of this can be noted down).
The opposing patrol (which, in the meantime, was conducting an exercise elsewhere) tries to discover the location of the abandoned bivouac (note: the search area must be predetermined), and once found, to gather as much information as possible about the campers based solely on the traces left behind. Each scout notes what they observed, what they found, and what conclusions they draw from it.
Later, both patrols gather, and individual scouts report based on their notes. The leader awards priority to the one who observed and reasoned best, scoring the value of observations and conclusions (naturally, a good deduction earns more points than merely stating a fact). The second patrol, after hearing the reports, confirms what was overlooked in the observations.
What should be paid attention to? How many fires were there, — how long the fire burned, — how long ago it was extinguished, — from which direction the patrol arrived and from which they left, — how many tents were pitched and where, and how many were in the camp, — what was cooked, — what objects were left behind and what conclusions can be drawn from them, etc. He who has his eyes open and knows not only how to look but also how to see will notice much, even if it seems at first glance that there is little to see.
When repeating the exercise, the type of traces is changed.
