Section titled “Translated text”The previous exercise can be arranged differently. Here, the scout leading the way does not make the agreed-upon but meaningless signs, but only those that have a specific meaning. The patrol following him observes the signs and acts accordingly. There are many such signs; in addition to the generally known ones, each patrol may have its own secret signs. For example, an arrow—whether made of sticks or chalk—indicates the direction of the march; then the patrol encounters a sign forbidding them to proceed further and a sign that a hidden letter is nearby, which explains the matter, followed by a sign to stop, a sign of danger (quick dispersal), and so on.
These signs can be of all kinds. For example:
| → | Go in the direction of the arrow. | ⊕ | Wait 10 minutes. |
|---|---|---|---|
| → | Go quickly. | ⊕ | “ 15 “ |
| → | Run! | ⊕ | “ 20 “ |
| ← | Turn back. | ⊕⊕ | “ 40 “ etc. |
| ← | Turn back quickly. | ⊙ | I went home. |
| ← | “ run | ⊙ | We will wait in the nearest village. |
| ⊕ | Proceed cautiously. | □ | Upon arrival here, shout. |
| × | Do not go this way. | □ | Upon arrival here, shout several times. |
| × | Stop, look for another path. | — | Upon arrival here, whistle. |
| * | Help! | □→ | A letter a few steps away. |
| ⊕ | We will meet here in one hour. | ⊖ | Good water. |
| ⊕ | We will meet here in 2 hours. | × | Enemy! |
| ⊕ | We will meet here in 3 hours, etc. | × | We have bypassed the enemy. |
| ⊙ | Stand in place (time unlimited). | ⊕ | Danger. |
| ⊙ | Wait 5 minutes. | ⊕ | We have split up. |
Signs can also be made from arranged stones, tied grass, twigs, etc. For example, arranged as:

Go to the left.

Danger.

Each patrol may also have its own secret signs, known only to themselves.
