Section titled “Translated text”Signalling can be practiced in the form of a game or play. Here is one for beginners:
Two patrols stand at a distance of several hundred paces and send out signalmen. The white [patrol] gives a word of 3–4 letters, the red [patrol] reads it (no one is allowed to help), and to prove they have read it, they repeat the word. After repeating, they themselves give a word of 3–4 letters, which the white [patrol] must then repeat, and so on. Eventually, one of them cannot do this, and then they drop out, passing the flag to the next [signalman] (fig. 23).
The patrol that drops out first loses. Therefore, it is necessary to know the Morse alphabet well. Here is the best way to memorize it:
For each letter, memorize one word that begins with that very letter. The number of syllables in the word corresponds to the number of symbols in Morse code. In whichever syllable you find the letter o, there is a dash, while the other syllables represent dots in the Morse alphabet.
