Section titled “Translated text”Everyone stands with their back to the terrain that is to be observed. Its boundaries to the left and right are marked by prominent, easily noticeable objects. (“You will observe the terrain from the railway line on the left to the river on the right.”) Now, “About turn!” and each person observes intently for 1 minute. Then, “About turn!” again, and each person writes down answers to a series of questions: “How many chimneys are on the factory building by the river? — What color is the cottage under the forest? — What is interesting on its roof? — What is the background of the chapel by the road? — What stands by the poplar in the meadow?” and so on. Guessing is not allowed; each person provides an answer only if they have noticed the thing in question. By counting the points for correct answers, the patrol leader will see who was the best observer.
It is also possible to focus the observation on a single object, such as a factory building, and then ask appropriate questions: “How many chimneys does it have? — What kind? — How many windows? — What is its background?” and so on. With practice, the observation time can be shortened.
Instead of answering questions, one may require a description of the terrain, and at first, without turning away from it. This is more difficult than it appears. Begin with the terrain’s layout, then move on to describing the objects. In any case, after the exercise, the terrain should be viewed once more so that everyone can check for omissions in their answers.
