Finding the Way

Section titled “Translated text”Lay out a map and draw on it with a pencil, very precisely, the route the patrol is to take. Lead it partly along a road, then through a forest, a meadow, a bridge, etc., and mark the point the patrol is to reach. The patrol observes this route on the map for several minutes, then sets out—but without the map. Each segment of the route is led by a different scout, and each marks the traversed path with chalk, twigs, stones, etc. Upon arrival at the destination and after a rest, they return along the same route, but now with the map in hand, and check where they deviated from the prescribed path. (When reading the map, each scout should memorize the image of the entire route, dividing it into sections, e.g., along the road to the north to the wayside shrine — along the path through the field to the east to the bridge — towards the factory chimney until the forest — along the forest path to the northwest, etc.).
A better variation of this exercise may be that each scout in the patrol traverses the entire designated route, marking it with their own signs, not just their segment. In this case, the scouts are sent out at such time intervals that each travels independently, not following the one before. It is not advisable to send all scouts at the same time in this variation, as the less confident ones will thoughtlessly follow the better-trained.
This exercise is somewhat the reverse of the exercise from item 47 b. Here, the appearance of the route on the map and important features of the surrounding terrain are memorized, and then the route is located on the ground; there, the route on the ground is memorized, and then it is sketched from memory.
