Stage by Stage to the Goal

Section titled “Translated text”Patrol follows patrol every 10 minutes. The route, cleverly laid out, leads through rocks, ditches, fences, bushes, forests, etc.—in short, through varied terrain, but over a small area of no more than a few kilometers. Each patrol has its route precisely marked on a map, or better yet, on a rough sketch, which also indicates the individual stages of the route, where each patrol must stop for 2 (3) minutes. Which patrol will reach the finish line, marked by a small flag, in the shortest time? At each stage, an impartial observer is present to record the patrol’s arrival and verify the rest period. Others, stationed at vantage points with a view of the surroundings, monitor the march. Running is strictly forbidden under threat of disqualification.
If the route is shorter, it may be unnecessary to make stops at the stages; instead, each patrol must leave the colored paper scraps previously given to it at each stage in a highly visible location as proof of having been there. The last patrol is followed by the leader, who collects the control slips.
Since this is not an ordinary race but rather an exercise in rapid orientation while locating stages, the drill can be slightly modified: instead of providing the patrol with a sketch, give them verbal instructions on where to find the first stage (e.g., a wayside shrine in the north-northeast direction) and that, under a stone (e.g., marked with a cross), they will find instructions for the second stage, and so on. These instructions must be left for the next patrol, which should be explicitly ordered. Who knows if this form of the exercise is not better.
The exercise should take place in unfamiliar terrain.
