To a Vanishing Target in Concealment

Section titled “Translated text”Point out to the patrol a distant but not overly prominent object—yet not so difficult to recognize and locate. Allow them to observe it for a moment to determine its position relative to other notable landmarks, then order them to reach it by any route, and if possible, in concealment. Choose such an object in unfamiliar or at least little-known terrain, one that will disappear from sight during the march. Make the exercise more difficult by first having them march for 5–10 minutes in a certain direction, and only then turn back to search for the indicated object.
After observing the object’s position relative to surrounding landmarks, the patrol must constantly look around and orient themselves, especially if they approach from a different side than they started, as the entire terrain configuration will appear differently to them—they will circle around until they finally reach the target. While accompanying the patrol, you must control their path, i.e., require them to advance in concealment. It is precisely this adaptation of the march to the terrain’s shape that makes finding the sought-after object more difficult.
Such situations often occur when sending a patrol on reconnaissance, when the patrol lacks a map, when they must leave the road to avoid enemy units, or when they must bypass inhabited places, etc.
