Section titled “Translated text”Each patrol purchases or makes its own sled. Two people take turns pulling it by a rope. It is advantageous (if possible) to train dogs for this purpose and harness them. Two scouts advance the troop by 2—3 kim., cutting across the field, while the rest follow with the sleds and must find the way according to their tracks. They are permitted to aid their orientation with signs left by the vanguard in the snow or made visible to them in any way. All other signs encountered along the way must be examined and their value assessed, having noted them beforehand. On the sleds are provisions, blankets, cooking utensils, firewood, and the like. During rest, snow huts are built, as small and narrow as possible, taking into account the length of the sticks intended to serve as roof bindings. The roof itself is made of brushwood, thoroughly covered with snow.
