When determining North, one must remember to account for declination. It is essential to become accustomed to the concept that the magnetic needle indicates only magnetic north. The sought-after geographic north can be found only after accounting for the angle of declination for the given locality, and only then will the North–South line drawn on the base of the compass or prismatic compass indicate true north.
In terrain-based games for youth above the age of 15, directions should be determined precisely using a compass, Bézard prismatic compass, or map. Youth should become familiar with these instruments, and therefore, several compasses or maps of the given area should always be available during exercises. (Compasses and maps may be acquired by the youth themselves. The geography teacher usually has a prismatic compass. Efforts should be made to acquire larger quantities of these instruments.)
One should make use of the prismatic compass. It is necessary to overcome the general passivity stemming solely from ignorance of the directional and operational value of the compass in the field. Those who have not verified that, with the help of a prismatic compass, one can reach a designated point in the field with great accuracy will always overlook the compass when training others. I have repeatedly observed on scout instructor courses that participants only become convinced of the usefulness of the prismatic compass after traversing several kilometers off-trail in completely unfamiliar terrain without a map.
