Section titled “Translated text”One time at camp during the night, with the 2 older boys, we transported more valuable food to the village, to the village head, using a borrowed wagon. We marked the transport route with scattered flour. The camp leader knew nothing of this matter, so in the morning, he raised a great alarm that the storeroom had been robbed and that wagon tracks were visible. Summoned, I put on a very tragic expression, ordered a gathering, and organized a pursuit by patrols along the wagon tracks, which soon merged with others on the road. There was great difficulty in choosing the correct direction at the point where the roads branched. However, the situation became clear when one of the patrols noticed traces of flour on a small bridge (a jolt when entering it and likely a torn sack). The patrols were already on a certain trail, with flour marking the thief’s path at every turn. Before reaching the village, I instructed the best patrol in tracking to determine, without drawing the villagers’ attention to their true activity, whether our food had accidentally ended up in one of the houses, and to report the result without entering it. After discovering the village head’s house, I explained to the boys that this was only a staged exercise. The disappointment was great. Many wise and combative suggestions on how to surprise the thief and what to do with him remained unrealized. Nevertheless, the tracking succeeded thanks to a certain purposefulness.
