A. Position the players at a distance of 5 to 10 steps from one another and designate a section of terrain or a single, more complex field object for observation. Allow them time (2 to 10 minutes, depending on the terrain and the age of the players) for observation. After the allotted observation time, the observers execute an about-face, run, or perform several somersaults or other playful movements, then finally sit down and commit the observed terrain to paper in the form of:

  • a) a description (for the youngest),
  • b) a freehand drawing or topographic symbols (end of primary school and beginning of secondary school),
  • c) a sketch and typographic symbols (older grammar school classes).

Looking back is not permitted. The above observations are best made on a hill, then descending to a lower position to transfer them to paper—this removes the temptation to turn around. The time allowed for committing the observed terrain to paper should be limited. After everyone has completed the task, evaluation follows.

B. Another variation involves observing: a section of a vegetable garden, orchard, field, or horse paddock; a herd of cows; or a farmyard. After a brief observation period, move away from the object and instruct the children to note on paper: which vegetable species were in the garden, which fruit trees were in the orchard, what colors and sizes of horses or cows were seen in the herd, or what was observed in the farmyard or field? These observations should be used to discuss natural phenomena or the life and work of people.
