Section titled “Translated text”This game is as engaging as the previous one and equally exercises mental sharpness and quick orientation. After selecting 12 partners, roles are assigned: one as the bull, one as the matador or espada, four as picadors, and six as capeadors. The playing area, or arena, is enclosed by a scouting hedge: a scrum (scouts standing in a row with arms linked under each other’s shoulders) if the game takes place during a rally of several troops; if on an outing of 2 patrols, marking the arena with small flags suffices. The course of the game, which is divided into 2 periods, is as follows. The bull’s entry onto the arena, where the picadors and capeadors already await, marks the beginning of the game. In the first part, the bull’s only distinguishing feature is 4—5 paper strips, 6 inches long, attached to its back. The picadors attempt to tear off these strips, while the bull defends itself by striking approaching players with its hand or a stick. Picadors are not allowed to tear off more than one strip at a time and must display all their agility and skill, as any picador struck by the bull is considered dead and must withdraw from the game. The capeadors assist the picadors by throwing themselves between the bull and the picadors during the chase, waving their red sashes (or handkerchiefs) in the bull’s face to force it to pursue them, thereby interrupting the chase after the picador. When all picadors are eliminated or all strips are torn off, the 2-th period, or the 2-nd half of the game, begins.
On the cleared arena, only two players now appear: the bull and the matador. The bull has its eyes blindfolded, and a sash loosely tied around its neck so that it can be easily torn off with a single tug. This is the matador’s task, who must be very agile and cautious to avoid being struck by the bull, as the bull then wins. If the matador succeeds in tearing off the sash, it signifies that the bull is slain, and the matador is the victor.
