Hunting the African Elephant
Translation details
Model:mistral-large-2512.Translated text
Section titled “Translated text”The scout chosen by lot to be the elephant receives a sash loosely tied around the right leg (below the knee), so that it can be easily torn off with a tug. In the absence of a sash, a scrap of paper may substitute. Two or 3 scouts (hunters) attempt to corner or outmaneuver the elephant so that one of them can seize the right moment and movement to tear off the sash (Africans, having ambushed elephants from behind, cut the tendons in their legs, and the immobilized cripple is then easily finished off).
The elephant faces the (2—3) hunters only frontally and does not allow itself to be surprised from behind. Meanwhile, it defends itself with a stick, and whoever it strikes steps out of the game, their place taken by the next number in the patrol. The game ends with the tearing of the sash as a victory for the hunters, or the elimination of the entire patrol as a victory for the elephant.
Variation: Instead of a sash, a paper balloon is attached to the back of the elephant’s leg above the heel.
The hunters, armed with sticks, must burst the balloon by striking it with their stick.
