Tracking by Scent at Night
Translation details
Model:mistral-large-2512.Translated text
Section titled “Translated text”This exercise is carried out during a calm but dark night, and in a place that is as open as possible—not in a forest or thicket. Smoke can be quickly produced by burning paper or a single box of matches. Finally, with appropriate precautions, ordinary gunpowder (not smokeless) may also be used. One patrol is sent out as the enemy to set up camp in a convenient location within a designated area. This patrol behaves entirely freely, lighting a fire and preparing a meal. Meanwhile, the camp guards report disturbing signals and sounds. The patrol leader immediately orders the fire to be extinguished with water, earth, or sand—only the traitorous smoke cannot be helped. Absolute silence falls over the enemy patrol so that the rest of the scouting unit (our side) cannot rely on hearing while tracking the enemy, but only on scent.
