Section titled “Translated text”A game of rural boys in the Rzeszów and Brody regions (Lesser Poland); application as in the previous one. For this game, a “palerka” (bat) or “pałka śmigła” (swinging stick), a small board about 80 cm long, is driven into the ground at a half-right angle, and a “wiko” (the lid), a small piece of wood, is knocked off the board with the bat. The lid is a stick 10 cm long, with a diameter of 2 cm, whittled flat on one side along 3/4 of its length down to the axis. It is placed with this flat side on the slanted surface of the board, facing upward, resting the angle between the thicker and thinner parts of the lid against the end of the board. When struck, the bat slides from below along the board and hits the lower end of the lid. Two players compete; the opponent catches the knocked-off stick, and if successful, takes the “field” (“victory”). If they fail to catch it, they throw the stick toward the board, trying to land it as close as possible. The player on the field attempts to hit it in mid-air as far away as possible. From where the stick lands, the distance to the board is measured by the length of the bat, counting 10 for each measurement. If the stick (the lid) hits the board, the player goes “to the pigs” (to defeat).
