Section titled “Translated text”A game for school-age youth in Mazovia, suitable for elementary schools and the lower grades of secondary schools. (Local names include Ball to the Hole, Battle of Nations, and the like.) The children stand closely in a circle; in the center is a hole dug in the ground, containing a ball. Each child adopts the name of a nation (Pole, German, French, English, etc.). To the side stands the “referee,” who calls out one of these names, saying: — Wokatur — for example, French! Then the “French” player quickly grabs the ball and aims at one of the companions, who scatter. If the throw hits someone, that player receives a mark from the referee; if the throw misses, the thrower receives the mark. The game then begins anew. The game is played until an agreed-upon number of marks, for example, to 10. The first to reach this number undergoes “coronation,” or “execution by firing squad,” receiving as many hits from the ball by each player as the number of marks the given player lacks to reach 10 (see General Part).
