A game for rural and urban youth in the Poznań region (sometimes called “The Black Man”); suitable for lower secondary school classes. The number of players and field dimensions are as previously described. However, no goals are marked near the shorter sides of the field; instead, at its center, two transverse lines mark a “border strip” with a width of 4 steps, divided lengthwise by a line into two halves. Within this entire border strip, the “king,” chosen from among the players (by drawing lots), moves freely. The remaining participants divide into two camps (“whites” and “reds,” “Mazurs” and “Kuyavians,” etc.); each, led by a “prince,” occupies one half of the field beyond the border strip before the game begins. At a signal given by the king, the princes send one of their subjects through the right half of the border strip to the opposite side. Once all, including the prince, have run across, the return run begins, always through the same half of the border strip and also at the king’s signal. During these runs, the king, turning left and right, attempts to catch one of the runners within the border strip (by striking them with a ball or a hand on the back). The caught player becomes the king, while the former king takes their place in one of the camps; subsequent kings return to their own camp if caught. The camp that supplies fewer kings within a set time (e.g., half an hour) wins.
