A game widespread throughout Poland, suitable for children’s gardens, primary schools, and the lowest grades of secondary schools.

(a) The most common form of the game involves children, except for two, forming a circle while holding hands. Inside the circle is the “mouse” (which has complete freedom of movement, as the players let it through), and outside is the “cat,” which they do not allow inside. When the cat catches the mouse, another pair is chosen.

(b) In Sierpc County (Mazovia), players line up in two rows facing each other; the chase takes place between and beyond them.

(c) In Kutno County (Mazovia), players also stand in two rows, but these rows are very close to each other, and each player holds both hands of their vis-à-vis. This creates a “hole” through which only the mouse is allowed.
