A game for urban and rural children, quite widespread in Lesser Poland; suitable for children’s gardens, elementary schools, and the lowest grades of secondary schools. The children choose a hawk (by a method such as counting out, e.g., I. 5, General Part); the rest of the players take on the role of doves. On the playing field (or indoors), they mark a “dovecote” (or “nest”), most often in the shape of a circle several paces in diameter. The hawk lies in wait for the doves and catches them, but only outside the dovecote, where they can always take refuge from pursuit or for a rest. Doves that are caught leave the game or (in other regions) turn into hawks. In the next game, the dove caught last becomes the hawk.
