The Maple Tree Game

Section titled “Translated text”A game for urban and rural children, widespread in Poland (known here and there as “The Bridge”); suitable for elementary schools. Two children stand apart as the “maple tree people” and secretly agree among themselves, before the rest of the participants, which one will be the “angel” and which the “devil.” They then stand next to each other and join hands via a ribbon or handkerchief, forming a gate in this way. The end of the ribbon, hidden in the devil’s hand, is tied in a knot. The remaining participants line up opposite the gate and ask a series of questions, to which the maple tree people respond. After these words, the children pass under the gate in a line, holding hands. The maple tree people let everyone through except the last one, whom they cut off from the rest with the ribbon, asking: “Whom do you side with—Kasia or Marysia?” or: “The apple or the pear?” The child chooses and accordingly stands on the side of the angel or the devil. Then the song, approaching, and cutting off one child at a time continue until only two remain (who become the maple tree people in the next game). Then the secret is revealed. The devil chases away his group with lashes from the knotted ribbon, while the angel rejoices and dances with theirs.
