Section titled “Translated text”Within a designated area of 2—3 kilometers by ², in undulating terrain with heavy cover, Group A is tasked with performing the following activities: a) measuring the width of river N near forester’s lodge G, b) measuring the height of the chimney at distillery S, c) conducting reconnaissance of the sources of stream W and producing a sketch of it over a length of (1 / 2) kilometers, d) measuring the depth of the river and the speed of its current near the bridge (road from M to T) and at the bend (both inner and outer banks) below village B, e) producing a sketch of the grove located east of mill F using the method of offsets.
Group A is aware that it is operating in enemy territory. It must therefore maintain security during movement and while performing its tasks. It locates the designated points using a map.
A second group, Group B, receives intelligence about the presence of an enemy unit within the area marked on the map. The tasks of Group B will be:
- locating Group A, 2) observing and reporting on their activities (Group B is not informed of the specific tasks assigned to Group A), 3) replicating the observed activities.
The principle “See without being seen” applies in this exercise.
If Group A detects Group B tracking it, it should attempt to evade and mislead the enemy. To this end, it may split up or take cover in any available hiding places, with the condition that it must complete the assigned tasks within the specified time (2—3 hours) and that the entire group must remain together during all activities.
To locate Group A, Group B must initially deploy a series of patrols into the designated area. Upon spotting Group A, it endeavors to follow discreetly, observe their actions, and subsequently replicate them. To carry out these observed tasks, Group B leaves a small patrol at the location, maintaining contact through a system of messengers, while the main force covertly follows Group A.
After the allotted time has elapsed, both groups assemble at the designated meeting point, where they organize their work and submit their reports to the exercise leader.
Group B wins if it successfully observes and accurately replicates more than 50 percent of Group A’s activities.
The activities performed by both groups should be compared, and the observations of Group A (performing the assigned tasks) regarding Group B (the tracking group) should be taken into account.
Each task completed by Group B should be downgraded in the overall assessment if the trackers (Group B) were well observed by those being tracked (Group A).
