a) individually, b) in groups.

In this game, if we have a sufficient number of maps, we primarily use individual competition or small teams. This creates good conditions for independent work with the map by all participants. However, most often we will have a limited number of maps and thus be forced to operate in larger groups. In this case, we must personally ensure that during the march, each participant takes turns holding the map, reads it, is able to orient themselves at any moment, and finds their own position.

We conduct the game as follows. The groups locate their own position on the map. Next, we designate the march’s destination. Initially, this may be an object dominant in the terrain (a village, forest, elevation point, road intersection), later—something more difficult to find (a small bridge, a small glade, a hillock, a pond, a forester’s lodge), and finally—only a location designated between specific points on the route, in a field, or in the forest.

The groups set off for the given point in turn, at intervals of 5—10 minutes, or head toward it via different routes, either designated by the instructor or chosen independently.

The group that reaches the designated point in the shortest time wins.

For younger and beginner participants, the route will need to be discussed in detail, and the map read together (participants will do this in turn).

For older participants, it is sufficient to designate only the point and leave them complete freedom in choosing the route. The leader of each group should only ensure that everyone collaborates in selecting the route and in orientation during the march.

Base such exercises on war stories or military tasks.
